Golf Drivers Are Not Created Equal, Part 2

If you paid a visit yesterday, you remember I talked about the loft differences between makes and models of golf drivers.  I came to the following conclusions:

1.  Due to the nature of making clubheads at the foundry, there will usually be discrepancies in lofts on drivers of +/ 0.5 degrees.  This could cause the better player consternation if he is moving to a new club of the same model.  If you read the find print in the specifications on OEM websites, you will see that they state that the difference exists.

2.  Because the center of gravity of a driver can be located high or low, different models of driver that are stamped with the same loft will play much different.  In some cases up to 2 or 3 degrees of difference, which even an average player will notice.

3.  Look for the key code phrases in a company's advertising.  They will try to sell the CG location and ball flight as a plus.

OK so for today let's look at some of the heads I have become quite familiar with through my experience fitting golfers for custom drivers and teaching them.  I listed them from highest to lowest.

High loft/spin ---->

TaylorMade R9

TaylorMade Burner Superfast

Cleveland Launcher Ultralite

Ping G15

Callaway Diablo

Cobra S3

TaylorMade R11

Taylor Made R7 (older)

Callway RAZR Tour

Geek DCT

Krank Rage Black

Orlimar HIP Ti (older)

MOI Intruder

Low loft/spin------>

Keep in mind that this is not a scientifically tested list, just my observations from backspin and launch angles compared to the stated loft on the clubs.  Here are the signs you aren't maxing out your distance because of excessive loft:

1.  Your drives fly too high.

2.  Your drives climb considerably, especially into the wind.

3.  You get less than 15 yards of roll on your drives.

4.  You have a fairly high swing speed, but you seem to be getting outdriven a lot.

So, to lower your ball flight, you would get less stated loft, and move further down the list above.

I have seen golfers fit so poorly, that an optimal driver allows them to gain up to 50 yards of distance immediately!  The average is over 20+ yards for sure.  If you have one of these driver high on my spin/loft list, and you are having problems getting good flight and distance, then step up to a Geek DCT or Krank Rage and let me build you a custom driver that will unleash your drives!
