The Mike Austin swing shares 90% DNA with a really good tour swing – because you just can’t escape the physics of a perfect shot – which are straight path, straight clubface, and center strikes.
The other 10% are what we are confident make this swing the best thing out there: The compound pivot, the free release, the precise motions that lead to precise accuracy and distance control.
Although 15 or 20 years ago, at the end of Mike’s life, he preached against the standard Tour swing because of the handle dragging, no release philosophy common at the time, the tour swings are now evolving back towards Mike’s ‘under up and out’.
It would be an arrogant mistake today to say that the tour swing is bad or that the MA swing is totally different and superior. Sure some guys are closer than others to this classic style of swing, but the difference is not a Grand Canyon but more subtle nuances in movement.
While Mike Austin was mostly known as a ‘big knocker’ in his heyday, his swing (when performed correctly) is a great tool to control scoring shots as well. This is why you won’t see me crushing drives in every video. I want to teach you how to score better!
